This is a very brief page, but seriously meant all the same. We hear and read a lot on the internet, newspapers and media about the reasons why our troops are fighting a war of attrition in Afghanistan. Variously it purports to be about the “War on Terror”, controlling the international supply of drugs, or securing oil supplies for the West – depending who you listen to. We think the reason is rather different. We think THIS is the reason why we're at war with the Taliban, and why we should damn well stay there until the job is done and the last vestige of this evil, savage cult has been swept away. They can bleat all they like about the moral perplexities of trying to foist a western-style democracy onto people who appear to be constitutionally unsuited for it, and they can whinny limply about the loss of life which is of course regrettable and sad, but in the grand scheme of things rather modest. But the enemy are at war not just with us and the Americans, but with the rest of the world and with the weaker 50% of their own population who lack the ability to defend themselves. And they seem to be prosecuting that war in a manner civilised people cannot permit to continue, however great the cost.
